From her stunning vocals to honest and relatable song writing, everything about Sian Cross points to stardom. Having experienced performing on stage with some of the worlds best known artists, including Stevie Wonder (yep, you heard it right), Sian has decided to pursue a solo career. One Stop Record Shop had a chat with the singer-songwriter to find out what really makes her tick…

  • Hey Sian, thanks so much for taking the time to chat with One Stop Record Shop. Could you introduce yourself and your music to people who you may be new to?

Hi there… My name is Sian Cross I am a London based, boat dweller and I’m addicted to music. I love all types of music but the music I write myself is electronic, spacious pop with haunting melodies and lots of delicious harmonies (another addiction of mine!).

  • Your latest single ‘Tell Anybody’ is really interesting lyrically, could you explain the inspirations behind it.

Of course! All my songs are based on true stories of people I have met with and talked to about their journey. This particular track is about a man’s struggle with his sexuality. It takes you through his journey of acceptance. From hiding his homosexuality, not just from his friends and family but also from himself at times, to now being completely open and true to whom he is and feeling loved and accepted by himself and all his loved ones.

  • Since you grew up in the West Country, how do you think this has impacted the artist that you are today?

I grew up in Weston Super Mare, which is not exactly the land of big dreams but it has surprisingly given birth to some exceptional musicians that I am lucky enough to call my friends. Growing up I was part of a Gospel choir at school which definitely gave me my love for interesting harmonies and honest emotive lyrics. But also my parents had a very eclectic musical taste so I grew up listening to Stevie Wonder, Pink Floyd, Rod Stewart, Michael Bolton (I Love him!), Mike and The Mechanics, Wings. The list goes on.

  • What do you hope to achieve through your career?

Music has a power beyond all of our understandings: from helping someone through a hard time, to bringing together an entire movement. If I can help even one person though my music, give one person the strength when they need it the most then I am happy. I would love, love, love to travel with my music. Playing in different countries across the world would be my dream!

  • ‘Tell Anybody’ has made lots of people (including us!) very excited for more releases, what can we expect from the upcoming material?

Firstly, I am really glad it’s made you excited – that makes me one very happy lady!!! You can expect more interesting beats, contradicted by soft vocals with lots of intricate harmonies. More true stories of triumph though the darkest times with honest lyrics and haunting melodies.

  • Finally, if you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be?

James Blake would be my ultimate. He has the voice of an angel and his music is so powerful, lyrically very minimal but still he says so much. Collaborating with him would be unbelievable
