Hot off the back of this year’s TGE Festival, Leicester’s rising star Mahalia is setting our speakers ablaze.
Fresh cut “I Wish I Missed My Ex” is as punchy as they come, blending slick R&B beats with melting pop-doused vocals that ease you into the track. Produced by Maths Times Joy – the mastermind behind Mahalia’s breakout debut,“Sober” – Mahalia’s latest offering blends old-school soul with honest, heartfelt lyrics.
Shot over a 22-hour period, the track’s accompanying video is as intriguing as it is surreal. Recorded in reverse around the back streets of LA, the relatively simplistic concept is certainly worth a few moments of your viewing time.
“The first time I heard IWIMME, I knew the track needed a big idea. I’ve always loved Spike Jonze’s video for “Drop” by the Pharcyde and decided to pay homage by creating a backwards music video with a contemporary spin.” notes director, Andrew Litten. “I hired a linguist from UCLA to teach Mahalia the song backwards which she surprisingly learned in a day.
