| Michael Malarkey performs at Wilton’s Music Hall |
He may be known as Enzo to most of the vampire-loving community after gracing our screens in the hit TV show The Vampire Diaries, but as One Stop Record Shop found out, Michael Malarkey is a man of many talents. The Atlanta born musician and actor journeyed across the Atlantic to grace the stage of London’s Wilton’s Music Hall – a venue we believe to be one of London’s true hidden gems – where he certainly showed us what all the hype was about.
Music is certainly not a new venture for Michael Malarkey, having played in hardcore rock bands as a teen in Ohio, he certainly knows his way around a fretboard. Tonight’s show however takes on a somewhat different tone, switching rock riffs for folky melodies and electric guitars for a single acoustic. Citing his influences as Bob Dylan and Nick Cave, this certainly gives you an idea of the underlying feel of the EP he has come to London to launch. With close to a million followers on twitter, it’s no surprise that this one-night stand at Wilton’s is a sold out show. From the moment you enter the historic music hall you can sense his fans’ anticipation (many of whom are The Vampire Diaries fans who have made the crossover) and it becomes clear that the crowd only have eyes for Malarkey as they murmur over the two support acts preceding him.
Taking to the stage with nothing but a guitar and enough charisma to fill the hall several times over, this is a man who knows how to keep an audience in the palm of his hand. With a pact set of two halves – acoustic tracks make way for upbeat melodies featuring a full band later on in the evening – the audience hangs on every word that Malarkey sings. Featuring a whole host of songs including the first single Through The Night And Back Again taken from his debut EP Feed The Flames, the audience were indulged in a night of Folk/Pop in all it’s melodic finery. With haunting lyrics of loves lost mixed with passion and a large spoonful of angst, Malarkey is sure to be making waves with this brand new EP.
Stay tuned for more photo’s from the evening!
