Yeah, that’s my deep and meaningful statement for today! Tara doesn’t need any gimmicks at all because she’s got the voice, the talent AND the personality to rock our socks off! Whether you’re Irish (like she is), Australian (like she is), Indian (like she is) or Malaysian (like she is and yeah, I’m serious!), there’s something so eclectic in her music that everyone can find bits that they’ll enjoy.
What struck me the most was her powerful (power is very attractive in our society, just ask Donald Trump and his powerfully ugly toupée) and big (whoever said size doesn’t matter simply tried to make themselves feel better for… well, obvious reasons) voice which floated beautifully out of my (very low budget) speakers.
Tara’s already been pushed and supported by a variety of press including the Irish Times which in our times (Irish, Australian, you name it) it’s rare to be noticed for just being good! One needs lights, special effects, big explosions, tons of surgeries or money, and James Cameron on their side to be appreciated or taken seriously! Rant over…
Well, I was lucky enough to grab a quick e-coffee (or iCoffee to be precise) with Tara and here’s what came out of it:
Hey Tara! Thanks for your time. For those who don’t know your sound, how would you best describe your music?
Oh gosh! Hmm I would say I make beaty and airy music with my over the top vocals.
All the way to the top vocals, you mean! Since you’ve got a few musicians you always work and perform with, are they part of your band or would you consider yourself a solo act?
I would consider myself both. Although I write the songs and bring them to the band, I wouldn’t be able to get the sound I envision without their creativeness.
What’s the most embarrassing thing that happened to you in your music career so far?
Well! If it were life in general I could give you an essay of examples! I can’t pin point an embarrassing moment within a musical situation though. But I’m certain something has happened without my knowledge and to other peoples’ amusement.
Whaaah, this answer doesn’t count! Anyone out there who has seen and experienced Tara making a fool of herself in public, get in touch please! Ok, so what’s the highlight of your career so far and why?
I would say the highlight so far would be the last year of creating my music. I’ve finally found my place and sound that I’ve been working on for so long.
Since people would like to get to know you more as a person, if you were to describe yourself in three adjectives, what would they be?
Happy, weird and tacky.
And where do you see yourself in 5 years time? Still imagine yourself being happy, weird and tacky?
I hope to see myself as an adult by then. Maybe?
What kind of music/ bands/ acts inspire you the most?
Oooo, I would have to say Radiohead, Elvis, Tori Amos and Fleetwood Mac.
Elvis Costello would be upset that whenever anyone mentions his first name, they all think of the awesome Presley dude… Sorry Elvis number two!
One can say a lot about the artist by their creative process… What does yours look like and when does it usually occur?
Usually I’ll loop a beat on my synthesizer, turn voice recorder on my phone and sing a melody over it, whilst singing with some sort of Sims language just to get the idea out. Or sometimes I’ll be out in public and I’ll think of a melody. So then there is the task of trying to sing really softly into my phone, which probably looks like I’m trying to creepily seduce somebody on the other end.
As long as you don’t whisper “My prrrrecioooous” when doing it, you’re fine! And if you could collaborate with any living artist, who would it be and why?
I’d love to collaborate with Half Moon Run, they’re such a talented fun band. I saw them live not too long ago and they were incredible. I’d also love to collaborate with Clean Bandit, I discovered them a really long time ago and loved the way they mashed so many styles together.
And just a couple more! I’d love to collaborate with Bjork and also Beyoncé. Reason? They’re deadly!
Are they? No wonder they go so well with my G&T! So…Your upcoming debut single Stars will be out soon. Can you tell us what the song is about and what it represents for you?
I wrote this song about a year ago with no meaning behind it at the time. And it wasn’t till I looked over it a while after when I realized it actually did have a story!
I left home 3 years ago and I guess when you move away from a place your original friends list whittles down. Stars represent the friends I once had but no longer have.
Oh, that’s a sad story! So what plans have you got for 2014 (apart from making new friends)?
My plan is to eat more cheese, eat less sugar, turn 24 (involuntary), release STARS, play many gigs and release a few more singles along the way.
On behalf of our readers, I’d like to thank you for sharing your thoughts, your music and your plans/new year’s resolutions with us!
