You know that time of the year when everyone is smiling, the sun is shining, the flowers are blooming and the birds are chirping? Well, I don’t since I live in England… However, if I could imagine anywhere like that I’d imagine LA… Yes, I’d be driving down one of those humongous American highways (that is IF I had a driver’s license or a car of course), the weather would be warm and sunny, and I’d be listening to music… Not just any music though… The new single by the Swedish based Summer Heart would be blasting through my speakers and I would feel super duper awesome!

I had a quick e-beer (why e-beer? Because it’s cool and macho even though it only involved those beer emoticons you put at the end of a boring text to spice it up a bit) with the main man and talent behind the Summer Heart project, and I asked him a few questions… He was very nice, friendly and mysterious… Oh, and he happened to be munching on some Swedish chocolates which, I’ve heard through the grapevine, taste delicious!
Why the name Summer Heart?
I first called myself Sommarhjärta, which is Swedish for Summer Heart. I found that very pretty. But after gaining a bit of international attention I decided to switch to the English equivalent.
Wow that’s certainly tricky to read for the non-Swedes: sommar-jer-tee? Summer Heart flows better and is less of a toungue-twister (I’m not an acrobat and neither is my tongue. Sorry ladies!) … And who is part of this project?
It’s just me, David Alexander.
That’s two! (Lame joke, I know)…  So how and when did you decide to be a musician and why?
Oh. It wasn’t something I decided. It came very naturally for me. Both my parents are musicians, so I kind of just did what they did.
Wow lucky you! My dad is a lawyer and my mom is a teacher! Maybe that’s why I do bits of writing for a living? Now I know who to blame for not becoming a rock star… And for those who don’t know your sound, how would you describe it?
Very simple straightforward pop music with vocals, guitar, drum machines and some synths. And then a layer of dreaminess on top of that. That’s how it all sounds.
Sounds dreamy indeed! And what does your writing process look like and what does it involve?
It involves my MacBook and a guitar and pen and paper. I have an idea that I record on guitar. Then I add a drumbeat. Then it just happens. I have no idea how, but time just flies when I am making music and then the song is done. I write lots of poetry as well. I use that for lyrics.
Wow, you seem like a true artist (and a sales person! Apple will be iPleased!) You must feel very close to your songs then… So what’s the nicest thing someone has ever said about your ever so precious music?
Someone said that I was the best songwriter since the Beatles. Hahaha. Not sure if it was a joke or not …
Were they sober when they said it? That’s quite a compliment though! And what’s the worst thing anyone’s ever said about your music then?
That it had no impact on them. I prefer that my music makes people feel something whatever that might be, rather than nothing.
Really, whatever that might be? What if someone said your music made them feel physically ill? Would that be better than make them neither ill nor un-ill? Just to be clear, your music does NOT make ME physically ill! When listening to your stuff, I usually imagine myself surfing in Australia (yes, I do exercise in my dreams and I’m bloody good at it too!) and feeling physically and mentally super un-ill! (And I’ve got a six-pack too! It’s called Heineken)… What’s the highlight of your music career so far and why?
It is hard to pick just one thing. I think the best thing is every time I finish a song that I am really satisfied with. That’s the highlight for me. But I guess I should mention some achievements here…
Yes you should! Your music has been used by H&M, American and Swedish TV series, you’ve got hundreds of thousands plays on soundcloud and your fan-base just keeps growing! Very humble man you are David! So what’s the most embarrassing thing in your career so far and why?
Haha. I guess it is when I sometimes meet “famous” people and don’t have a clue who they are. I don’t know if that is career related?
Well, it is career-related for those you meet… And not a very successful career apparently if you don’t know who they are… So what does your daily routine look like apart from bumping into semi-celebrities?
I wake up early. Buy croissants and espresso. Then I’m having a long breakfast. If I am inspired I write some poetry or play some guitar. If I am not inspired to make music I grab my camera and go out for a walk. I love to just walk around. Then I go home and read. That’s kind of how a normal day in my life goes.
Wow, you sound like you live a very zen life! Can you tell us one interesting fact about yourself that people don’t know about?
I have mad cooking skills!
Good-mad, I hope? You’re about to release your new single U Got All I’m Looking 4. Can you tell us what (or who) it’s about and what the reaction has been so far?
I’d rather not tell what my songs and lyrics are about. I want people to make up their own stories when listening to my music, to make the song and the lyrics mean something to them.
Aha, so that’s how you want to play this… In that case I’ll fill in the blanks and say that it’s about your dream woman you’ve met on the tube, and you saw her face in a crowded place, she was beautiful but she’ll never be with you and you don’t know what to do (?) Oh wait, I’m thinking of another track… That un-Beautiful song actually DOES make me physically ill!
Ok, let’s move on to your live shows then…  What’s your set-up when you perform in front of an audience?
It is always different. It depends how many of my friends I can afford to bring on tour. Sometimes it is just me on stage. Then I sing and use samples. Most often we are three people on stage. A guitarist, a synth player and me singing and playing guitar/sampled bass and then a drum machine.
Wow, you must be good at multitasking, very unusual for a guy… The best I can do is sit in front of the tv, hold my remote in one hand and a pizza slice in the other… Impressive, ey?
So the final question we’ve all been waiting for… What are the plans for Summer Heart in 2014?
To release a new single on the 27th of April, and later this year hopefully releasing a full-length album as well. Then I hope that I will be touring a bit. Other than that I am trying to take things as they come and stay positive. Cheers!

Thanks so much David! Best of luck with your single and be sure to count me as a huge (ok, not huge just round around the edges and chunky) fan of yours!
