Lauren Hibberd

We’re all for new and emerging talent here at One Stop Record Shop, which is precisely why we’ve developed 5 in five – a quick fire concept that gives you the low-down on fresh new artists at record breaking speeds. We caught up with Lauran Hibberd to discover the ins and outs of her musical career thus far…

People tend to compare you a lot to the likes of Regina Spektor, Kate Nash and the sweet side of the female artists spectrum. Would you say these are accurate comparisons?

I would absolutely love to think that, they are all great artists to be compared to so it is a huge compliment for me. But I can’t help but feel like as I’m ever changing and progressing, that a lot of my newer tracks are leaning towards something a little more brash.

You performed at this year’s Bestival main stage, pretty damn cool. How was that for you and how did that come about? Any fun stories to share?

I had such a great time, I absolutely love Bestival so to perform on the main stage was an incredible experience. It came about due to winning a local completion to play last year, and the lovely Rob Da Bank was kind enough to invite us back for round two! It was super muddy, I’ve actually never seen anything like it. So my sparkly Dr Martens had seen better days by the end of that (probably wasn’t my wisest move, but refused to wear wellies on the main stage). I also met one of my idols, Lucy Rose and was totally not as cool around her as I was in my head. Ha!

So, what does a day in Lauran’s life look like?

It mostly consists of writing. I’m in the studio next week recording my next few singles, whilst filming a music video in the evenings so I have a particularly fun few weeks ahead. If I’m not up to anything cool and musical, I’m probably trying to be an adult somewhere.

Your previous tracks “Old Head Young Shoulders”, “Eliza” and also your latest single “Hunny is this what adults do?” all have an autobiographic ring to them, is that so?

Definitely, most of my writing is influenced by my surroundings. I find it quite hard to write about something I’m not personally affected by, so in ‘Hunny Is This What Adults Do’ I’m mainly highlighting my fear of growing older and accepting that people I’ve grown up with and shared baths with as a child are now having children of their own etc. The same goes for the other tracks, ‘Eliza’ is influenced by a girl I went to school with, and Old Head Young Shoulders was a song I wrote on a ferry after being seriously belittled for the first time.

What has been your favourite memory in 2017 so far and why?

It has to be Bestival, it was so crazy to be on a stage that size and have a dressing room with my name on. It was so surreal, and I just want to do it again and again and again.
