FOURS BAND
FOURS BAND

Imagine we got our hands on an enormous blender, combined Florence Welch’s vocals with a dollop of The Human League’s 80s glory, and topped it all off with a sprinkling of CHVRCHES and Bombay Bicycle Club. The resulting musical concoction would not only be heaven to our ears, but would also resemble the pop infused indie delights of FOURS.

The London-based indie four-piece – yes, the name really does say it all – have been hard at work in the studio, trimming, layering and cultivating the upbeat whimsical sound that embodies their debut EP  Everything I Never Said which was released on 4 September.

As anyone who reads One Stop Record Shop on a regular basis will already know, there’s nothing we love more than sitting down with music’s brightest young things and talking about music endlessly over an e-beer. So we thought why not do  just that, catching up with FOURS in a brief moment of down-time to talk EP’s, collaborations and Brackenbury Deli Sausage Rolls.

Hey guys, so how did FOURS originally come about?

We started working together about a year & a half ago but it took a while to actually develop a sound we loved. Last December we locked ourselves in a friends studio and as a project we wrote/recorded a song in 24 hours. The subsequent song was “Leave Me” and essentially FOURS was conceived from this process!

For anyone who hasn’t heard your music, how would you describe it?

It’s Indie-Pop with bold vocals, featuring subtle 80s influences, particularly on the guitar. It is fun and energetic and crafted to make you dance.

Now that’s just up our street. We understand your Debut EP came out at the start of September? Tell us a bit about it.

As I mentioned, the first song we wrote for it was “Leave Me”. We then spent a long time on 6 demos, crafting them into that particular sound, which resulted in us selecting “Damage” and “Stranger” to be the ones we’d take to the studio. We self-released the EP and the reaction has been amazing so far – which is great because that’s what I’m always so scared of!

So if you could collaborate with any other artists/band (and we mean ANYONE) who would you pick?

We have lots of heroes! I think for our guitarist Dan, playing with Lindsey Buckingham would make his world. Similar to if I was ever in the same room as Dave Grohl. But we’d love to collaborate with artists and producers like Jack Steadman and Matty & George from The 1975 – particularly with their work on The Japanese House. We’re also really big fans of new artists like Fickle Friends, High Tyde and Oh Wonder, whom we’d love to work with in some shape or form in the future.

OK, here’s a question we ask all our featured acts: what’s the strangest/funniest/weirdest thing to happen during a live show?

We’ve only played a small number of shows as we’re so new, but in a previous band I walked on stage during the intro, stepped on my bass players tuner and subsequently muted him. The generator also blew during the second song, so this wasn’t such a great show!

That sounds far from ideal, you should have passed it off as pyro! Anyhow, if you had to pick three objects that sum up FOURS (they can be as weird and wonderful as you want) what would they be?

Sainsbury’s London Gin, Brackenbury Deli Sausage Roll, Rumours LP

Ooh, now that’s an interesting one! So what are FOURS plans for the future?

We’re playing Brighton (Sticky Mike’s –  23 October) and London (Paradise – 17 November) which I’m super excited about – it’s my favourite part about being in a band. Then we go to the studio in December to record our next single which is really exciting. 2016 should be a really fun year for us, I just can’t wait to play our music to more people!
We’re guessing the reason behind the sausage rolls will remain an eternal mystery, however their music certainly won’t. If you want to catch more of FOURS, check out their debut EP  Everything I Never Said, which was released on 4 September.
Fancy even more?
