Ladies, I think I’ve found you your dream men (yes, plural, so you actually have a choice for once!)… Forget online dating, forget romantic films and knights in shining armor… The new generation of heart-throbs are called The Gentlemen and their upcoming new single “This Is Where” sounds like a true and utter love song! I wish I’d written it for my ex-girlfriend. I strongly believe that if you write a beautiful song for a girl, she’ll be yours forever… Or at least until she meets a successful footballer which is actually what happened in my case…
Anyway, so I had a chance to quickly had some nice and nutritious e-cookies (The Gentlemen are a healthy bunch, by the way) with the lead vocalist, Nicholas (oh, and don’t call him Nick or Nicky because he doesn’t like that) and asked him a few questions.
Hi Nicholas, I know you’re super busy at the moment, so thanks for taking the time to e-talk to me… How did you guys all meet and when did you decide to form a band together?
We were all involved in making a friend’s album and were admiring each other’s work. It just seemed like a foregone conclusion that we’d work together after that.
Wow that was meant to be, wasn’t it… And why the name The Gentlemen?
Really simple. The guys are good lads. I suggested it and basically no-one hated it so it stuck.
That sounds promising… For those who don’t know your music, how would you describe your sound and who would you compare yourselves to?
We often call it electro indie and sometimes we call it disco pop. There’s four lads in a room making records to dance to with real instruments.
Any room? Even bathroom? That’s what I call a true skill! Could you tell us a little bit about each member, their names and what they do in the band?
Sean plays guitar and sings. He’s a bit Indian and a wicked chef… Joel plays drums and percussion. He’s the hardest worker and a deftly timed comic… Josh is a multi instrumentalist, sickeningly good at music theory and comically good at forgetting belongings. I have an incredibly long name, am far the strongest in the group and I sing too.
Hold on a sec… Sean is only a bit Indian? So the dishes he cooks are just a bit tandoori, I’m guessing (?)… So apart from cooking, who writes the songs and who is in charge of the arrangements?
On this last album I was gracious enough to allow everyone a hand at writing lyrics and melodies. It is nice to give the young pups a chance. It also allowed everyone the opportunity to critique each others’ parts and suggest lines here and there. It has been an incredibly collaborative effort.
Aha, I’m guessing you’re the alpha male in the bunch then?… I know you’ve all just come back from touring the UK with The Feeling. What were the highs and lows of this experience?
Highlights were the fans of The Feeling, The Feeling themselves and meeting Sophie Ellis-Bextor. Lowlights: missing out on a lot of parties as we had to drive ourselves everywhere.
Oh that must’ve been tiring. Seems like it was definitely worth it though! So out of all the cities you visited during the tour, which one would you go back to and why?
All of them but particularly The Stables near Milton Keynes. Ace venue.
Wow, you’re really straight to the point… No time for time wasters! I should certainly learn a thing or two here… I’ve noticed that you’ve also performed in Europe. Which countries have you played in and what’s the difference between the UK and the European audience?
We’ve played Norway, Sweden, Germany, Holland, France, Belgium and Italy. Scandinavians are a little more reserved. The closer you are to Southern Netherlands though the crazier the people are. Belgium wins for beer.
Well, good for Belgium since they don’t usually win anything, not even the Eurovision contest… And what’s the most memorable experience in your career so far and why?
Being in Norway for many reasons. Not least meeting my wife there.
So you’re married? Oh, sooorry ladies! So what’s the most embarrassing experience in your career and why?
I was once topless and body-painted on Dutch TV as part of the weather forecast for Holland. That was awkward, especially as I’d recently put on weight.
Uuuh that’s random, weird AND brave… Kind of like the naked weather girl in the US! Great, now I’m imagining you topless and forgot what the next questions is… Ehm, ok, so if you guys weren’t in a band, what would you be doing instead?
I would be farming, Sean would be teaching young children, Joel would be a tour manager and Josh would be playing music in something elaborate and weird.
And if you could collaborate with any living musician, who would it be and why?
John Hopkins. He’s incredible and we’re all fans of his work.
Can you share a random interesting fact with us about each band member?
One of the following is true: Nicholas collects typewriters. Sean has no feeling in his left leg after suffering from pneumonia in infancy. Joel is married to a famous musician with blonde hair. Josh is an obsessive Sex and The City fan.
I know which one is true! Joel being married to a famous musician with blonde hair, right? … Not many blonde musicians to choose from though, is there:l  Ehm, Jessica Simpson? Taylor Swift? Nicki Minaj? Miley Cyrus?… (10 min later)… Lady Gaga? Britney Spears? Sting? Elton John during his blonde- wig faze?  Ok fine I give up… So what’s next in store for The Gentlemen in 2014?
We’ll be touring and touring and releasing This is Where on April 27th 🙂
