Whether the name Jake Morley is new to you, or you’ve been aware of him for some time now – this is not a name you’ll forget. With glowing press reviews, the support of huge radio stations including BBC 6 Music along with BBC Radio 2, and a dedicated fan base, the success of his debut album Many Fish To Fry was pretty much guaranteed.

However, after a death in the family, Jake withdrew from the public eye and kept to himself. The writing process of his follow up album seemed to consume Jake and he felt as though none of his new songs reached the desired calibre.

That was until his new album, The Manual, came together. The thing is, it’s just that – a manual. It’s in many ways a set of instructions, based on the transition into adulthood. So personal in fact, that many listeners feels as though they are entering Jake’s deepest and darkest thoughts.

The most recent material we’ve heard from Jake is outstanding. Watch Yourself  is one of his recent singles and lyrically, it’s completely captivating, giving us an honest and raw insight into his struggles with mental health. Likewise, Strange Loop, his newest single, was actually inspired by Escher as an attempt to describe the concept of moving through a hierarchical system and finding oneself back where they started. Hence, the repetition in some of the lines represents this paradoxical idea of feeling stuck in the same place. We did notice that there are a few sonic similarities to the sounds of Peter Gabriel, especially from tracks like Sledgehammer and the vocal distortion throughout The Tower That Ate People.

At One Stop Record Shop we think Jake Morley has some great things up his sleeve, so keep an eye (and an ear) out, because it’s a name you’ll be hearing a lot more about.
