Lying Bstrds exclusive interview

No need to readjust your screens, you’re just staring at the trippy artwork for Liverpool quartet LYING BSTRDS new single, “Youth & Old Age“. More than just an amusing abbreviation, the band are combining gritty vocals with bags of up-tempo revelry for your listening pleasure. We sat down with the Scouse foursome (that just sounds plain dirty, doesn’t it?) to discover a little more about these northern newcomers and the sound they have to offer.

We love bands from Liverpool; The Beatles, Sound Of Guns, Circa Waves, The Wombats, the list goes on! What do you think it is about Liverpool that makes its musical exports so special and how have those names it impacted your music?

Are the Wombats even from Liverpool?! Either way, Liverpool is a womb of creativity. There’s something in the water; there’s definitely a great musical lineage here. I wouldn’t say any of the other acts have impacted us, it’s just what we do. Liverpool has real talent.

Yep, The Wombats are indeed from Liverpool. “Youth & Old Age” is a catchy old track that’s seen us press repeat a fair few times. What’s the inspiration behind it?

Nice one! The track’s about finding out nothing actually exists and becoming aware of what’s going on around you. It’s about breaking the monotony of life.

And what about the band? It’s a unique one! How did you come up with that?

It was handed to us on a platter. It was easy.

I don’t know who delivers your platters but we want to know them. So what’s been the best part of being in LYING BSTRDS then? And what do you hope to achieve over the next few years?

The best part is gigging – we drive all our energy into our live shows. It’s like going to war but its OK because you’ve got the biggest gun. If our energy translates to the people then we’ll be fucking massive. We want what every fucker wants when they pick up a guitar. We want to play in front of huge crowds and here our music from car stereos passing by.

Well you know what they say: size matters. OK lads, it’s time to confess; could you tell us an embarrassing tour secret? We wont tell…

On tour in the US, our drummer, Gorry, knocked out Screech from Saved By The Bell. Don’t know if that’s embarrassing? Probably was for Screech! Screech started it by the way! We don’t just go around starting fights with 90’s Teen Sitcom stars for nothing.

Screech?! He always seemed like a nice guy! Anyway, back to business. When you were going through the process of making “Youth & Old Age”, were there any bands you looked to for inspiration?

I don’t think we sat down and talked about inspirations, we just let it take us were it needed to go. Our musical backgrounds and influences are all over the place – two of us are DJ’s too, so you have to have a wide pallet. There’s definitely plenty of vibes knocking around but it’s mostly us. Influences seem to come as a hindsight.

Lastly, we’d love to hear your point of view on this. What do you think is missing from current music that’s out there at the moment? Do you think you guys have what it takes to fill that gap?

We’re missing, simple as that. There’s too much wishy-washy, safe shite going around. Everyone is skirting round the edges. No one is stepping up and planting the flag.
