baba ali I've been voodoo'd

If you’re after an up-tempo, infectious misfit of a track, look no further than “I’ve Been Voodoo’d“, the latest cut from Baba Ali.

Despite having upped sticks to the US, Ali recorded the fresh cut in little old London Town with producer Andy Savours (My Bloody Valentine). Needless to say, slick production on this track is a given.

Blending electronic flecks with repetitive chants of “I’ve Been Voodoo’d”, the track also features intriguingly witty lyricism in what can only be described as a thoroughly understated protest song. Cries of “I didn’t bother to cast my vote / Guess I’m complacent and forgot you was woke” combine with contemporary reflections of “So many thoughts that I’d like to express / but I’m restricted to 140 characters or less”.

Equal parts defiance, anger and confusion, it’s both a rallying cry and a wrathful howl, made all the more digestible thanks to its pummelling percussive base of handclaps, juddering bass and back- to-93 rave-era yelps.

“After just recently moving from New York to London late last year, I witnessed from afar a racist, sexist, fascist egomaniac swindle his way into the White House,” notes Ali. “In the midst of all this shock, anger and disbelief, I found a way to write a song about it, which became ‘I’ve Been Voodoo’d’. It’s also a nod to T-Model Ford and Hound Dog Taylor, whom I’ve been listening to constantly as of late.”
