Pussy Riot, the rebels with a cause, are once again forcing their way through our speakers with all the ferocity of an elephant on steroids.
Fresh cut “Police State” does precisely what these feisty females do best: craft well honed pop music whilst delivering a poignant message – oh, and showcase shit hot balaclavas. Blending unrelenting choruses of the catchiest calibre with soaring melodies, the latest offering from Russia’s punk rock collective is an earworm track to get your teeth into.
“If we find a way how [sic] to act together, be articulate, focused and persuasive, we can shift mountains,” states member Nadya Tolokonnikova of “Police State”. “Look back: people did it before. Soviet dissidents were fighting against one of the most oppressive governments on the planet and shared their own DIY magazines via secret networks. Labor union leaders and civil rights activists were dying for their beliefs in the US. And it actually did make our world a better place.”
The accompanying visual is a punchy offering, summing up the current state of affairs, courtesy of authoritarian leaders like Putin and Trump. Ballet dancers are juxtaposed by domineering figures wielding batons. It’s a rather high-octane affair.
