Mavrick new single funeral exclusive interview

Mavrick release up and coming pop single Remedy

There are two types of artist in this world: those who set out to chase and emulate current musical trends, and those who set out to push boundaries, take risks and forge their own musical path in the hope the public’s senses are acute enough to detect them. Mavrick is the latter.

As a musician who’s already made waves with his hit single “Remedy” (having amassed over a million streams on Spotify alone), this Scandi pop-sensation lives up to his name in every sense of the word. Unafraid to re-imagine the pop music landscape, the man himself joined us for an e-beer over at One Stop Record Shop HQ to talk inspiration, dream collaborations and new releases.

How are you? Thanks for taking the time to chat with us here at One Stop Record Shop.

I’m very good thanks! Spring has just arrived in Stockholm, so now we can move on from our lives as vampires and be human beings again!

We quite agree! So could you tell our readers a little about yourself and your music?

I’m a 26-year-old guy from Sweden who has this naïve vision that he can change pop music and stop it from being so boring and predictable. I want to make pop music without any rules, without any “you can’t do that”.

You’ve given yourself quite a challenge but the fact you’re taking on the industry with such force is an exciting one. We love your new single “Funeral”, could you tell us about the lyrical inspirations behind the song?

Oh you’re so kind! The lyrics are about letting someone down – the very last person you ever want to let down. It’s about being out all night, being fucked up, coming home to look at the most beautiful thing in the world and knowing you’ve hurt that beautiful thing once again. Simply being a dick (dick is such a great word for someone who’s unpleasant. Women are very rarely unpleasant, it’s always dudes).

Wow, that’s some brutal honesty on your part. I think we can hear half the male population protesting their innocence right now! But in terms of your career, what would you say has been the most significant moment thus far?

I think it must have been when “Remedy” was released. I’ve been working on this album for quite some time, so to finally have something out there for people to listen to felt and still feels fucking awesome! Now I just want to show people everything else I’ve got to offer.

Remedy’s one of those R’n’B tinged pop tracks that make you sit up and listen. It’s definitely a sound that draws parallels with the likes of Rudimental and Alex Care, which musicians would you personally compare yourself to?

I try not to compare myself too much with others, especially not my heroes. I will never reach their level of awesomeness, so I’ll have to strive to find a way to my own awesomeness. That being said, I’m definitely inspired by ABBA, Prince, Massive Attack and gospel music.

Pop seems going through a gospel tinged phase at the minute, especially with great breakthrough acts like Parson James. There are some exciting things on the horizon, but in terms of your musical career, what are you most looking forward to in 2016?

I’m really looking forward to release my album, get out on the roads and play my music! I want to put up a show and win everyone over! I’ve been waiting for this a long time so now there’s no one stopping me.

Mavrick thanks for chatting with us, however in true One Stop Record Shop style, we’ve got one last question for you: if you could collaborate with any musician in the world right now, who would it be?

I want to say Prince but if that happened I would just be paralysed, standing there with my mouth open and probably cry a little bit. So I’ll go for Kanye instead. He’s fucking crazy and I love that!

Well there you have it, if you want an artist that’s unafraid (to work with Kanye and dream big) then Mavrick’s your man. You can check out his latest single “Funeral” below or find him over on Facebook.
