Corey Harper

Today we’re heading stateside to introduce Portland-based singer/songwriter Corey Harper.

OK, so before we begin, let’s get the whopping great elephant well and truly out of the room. YES he does sound an awful lot like John Mayer. NO he isn’t secretly just John Mayer in disguise, utilising SnapChat‘s FaceSwap feature far too well.

It’s an undeniable comparison, but where John Mayer holds the “gritty yet brooding musician” card aloft, Harper’s in possession of the contemporarily cute, yet highly polished alternative.

Combining the reflective pluckings of an acoustic guitar with a level of sultry reverb normally reserved for Americana doused country music, “California Sun” is a track so laid back, it’s practically horizontal. With hook filled choruses that will have you humming along in no time, it’s no surprise Taylor has already built up an army of loyal fans. If we’re honest, at times the vocals feel a tad overproduced and restricted, however, there’s no denying “California Sun” is a mellow summer track fit for those lazy afternoons.
