Nothing beats a good ol’ dose of rock tinged pop in all its finery – it’s pretty much the greatest unwritten rule in music.
Brimming with 80s nostalgia, “West Coast” upholds this understated theory of mine wholeheartedly (not that I enjoy blowing my own trumpet or anything). Combining guitar riffs distinctly reminiscent of The Killers, with the synth infused pangs of The 1975 and Parachute’s more recent back-catalogue, Minneapolis rock poppers Step Rockets have nailed a hybrid that can often come off as overtly cheesy.
Mixed by Mark Needham (The Killers/Moby), the initial Killers vibe we detected suddenly all makes sense. It’s dance-worthy pop in all its fickle, synth laden glory – something we’d definitely take a second listen to given half the chance.
The EP Future Nature is released on 15 April via Harbour / Caroline Records.
Who would say no to a bit of 80s nostalgia!? Love your tips for new music to watch out for – keep ’em coming! (also completely agree with your theory by the way)
