Kodaline by Laura Lewis 1

Monday night saw the Irish invade London – and surprisingly, there wasn’t a single politician in sight.

No, I’m talking about a band famed for their soaring choruses, infectious hooks and harbouring more emotive lyrics than you can feasibly shake a stick at. If your first thought was a Westlife reunion, it’s time for you to leave this site. Immediately.

I’m talking about the dulcet tones of Kodaline. Taking over London’s Omeara following the release of their long-awaited single “Brother” (catch the tear jerking video below), the boys were here to entertain.

Rolling out a string of fan favourites, from “A Love Like This” and “The One” to “All I Want“, the four-piece were welcomed back with open arms. “High Hopes” saw the crowd hanging on every word, as unified cries of “But I’ve got high hopes / It takes me back to when we started...” reverberated off the sweat drenched walls of the intimate London venue.

Unleashing a slew of new material – including a summer anthem whose melody is sure to ring a few bells –latest single “Brother” brought a refreshing edge to proceedings. Blending the band’s penchant for soaring choruses with an altogether darker (vocoder heavy) edge, the track is undoubtably set to become another Kodaline anthem.

All in all, it was a solid return to form from a band that have been in hibernation of late. Kodaline are always a safe bet when it comes to emotionally drenched pop music. It’s entertaining, it’s pleasant on the ear, but breaking boundaries has never really been part of the agenda. A firm favourite come rain or shine, these chaps never fail to put on credible live performance.
