Sugarhouse premiere Love Anyone Else

This is the part of the job we LOVE – delivering helpings of fresh new music exclusively to your front door.

Today we’re excited to bring you a premiere from a band with BIG things on the Horizon. SUGARHOUSE, AKA Charlie Sinclair and Connie Craven, are a duo bringing a blissfully nostalgic twist to the world of indie-pop. We had a chat with the duo over an e-beer to get to know them a little better and discuss some of the track’s finer points.

Be sure to catch the video below!

How exactly did SUGARHOUSE come about then?

We met at Reading festival in 2014 – Charlie essentially just stumbled into Connie’s camp and didn’t leave. Fast forward 2 years and after many different projects and bands, we have SUGARHOUSE.

Your new track “Love Anyone Else” has a pretty nostalgic edge (kinda reminiscent of currents acts like Blossoms and the Lemon Twigs); Is this SUGARHOUSE’s signature sound?

I would say that’s pretty dead on! We are all about creating simple music that’s very honest. We don’t like taking ourselves too seriously, like a lot of modern bands seem to. The old schoolers were just about making great music for fun and that’s what we want to do.

So what was the writing process like for the track?

Very natural. We went to see La La Land (which we loved) and then it just kind of came out when we got home. Charlie really wanted to write a bit of a love letter to Connie in song form and that’s the result.

Your new video has a distinctly DIY feel about it. Is it all part of your laidback vibe or does it stem from budgetary restrictions?

WELL… we recorded a video before this that had a much bigger budget. It totally lacked realness and it sort of felt like we were pretending to be bigger than we are. This is who we are, two musicians making songs in our living room, so why not show that.

Any plans for an EP in the works?

We have recorded an EPs worth of material… so who knows. If people want an EP, we got one.

Most embarrassing moment as a band? (It’s fine, we’re all friends here…)

Connie got high when we recorded the EP and kinda freaked out. She spent an hour in a stable in the rain with wet socks. Not her finest hour.

SUGARHOUSE NEW VIDEO PREMIERE

Geez, that sounds like a night to remember. OK, so we love new music, what three emerging acts would you recommend to look out for at the moment and why?

ANTEROS have big tunes and anyone that sees Laura Hayden falls in love with her. Obviously The Lemon Twigs are essentially the saviours of pop music. We saw them at Koko and it blew our brains. We also caught a band called Dead! the other night and they are bringing emo BACK!

We have this little tradition of asking bands what 3 items sum them up (they can be as weird and wonderful as you want); what would your 3 items be and why?

Guernsey milk… Charlie is obsessed as he’s an island boy. It’s more expensive than Tescos own, but it’s worth it.

Connie’s leather jacket – it kinda smells weird because it’s from Oxfam, but we both wear it pretty much everywhere. You can’t meet SUGARHOUSE without one of us wearing that jacket.

Finally we have these really long paintbrushes that seem to make an entrance in everything we do… in the music video Connie is using them as drumsticks.

Any plans for world domination?

Yeah we’re calling the world leaders tomorrow, hopefully we can work out a strategy.
