'WIB' album cover Sylvette

Peddled as “the only band this year whose album sleeve features a painting by a former muse of Picasso” (OK, we’re listening), it’s not often a group emerge with such a vast array of influences, you have a fair bit of trouble concisely describing their sound.

Introducing Mancunian four-piece Sylvette, a group on a musical mission to shake things up more violently than the Hulk posing as a bartender. An obscurely quaint melding of jazz elements, folk tinges and building rock sensibilities, Sylvette’s sound is one we can’t quite put our finger on (and we kinda love it).

Having first met as a bunch of music obsessives whilst studying at music college in Manchester, these chaps have certainly come a long way. The addition of a strings in the form of Oz Tabor adds a sense of grandeur to the whole operation, grabbing a conventional alt-folk sound and transporting it into a strange, rock-tinged, Muse-meets-Radiohead-esque realm.

“We were very obsessive about how music works, and how to build songs,” note the band. And aside from their focussed approach to composition, this quartet are set on doing things independently. “We just decided that we didn’t want to wait for someone else to come along and discover us. We’ve got the songs, we’ve done the album, and we are going to release it on our own label, then develop, then move on, and grow.”
